REMINDER: Next Friday (ie March 28th) is the deadline to apply for next year’s FLF Executive Positions!!! See below for the email message we sent out earlier this week with details:

Hello Robson Hall Community,

The FLF would like to make an open call out for members of the executive committee for the upcoming year.

The FLF is the law school’s feminist organization and typically holds 5-6 events per year. These include roundtables and presentations by faculty and members of the Winnipeg community, as well as fundraising events that benefit local organizations. The FLF also serves as the liaison between organizations like LEAF MB and Robson Hall.

There are a number of positions that need to be filled, including chair (or co-chairs), vice-chair, communications director, and outreach coordinator. The time commitment is generally minimal and often at your discretion.

If this interests you, please submit a brief application to rhea.majewski@gmail.com or carla.risley@gmail.com that outlines your interest in equality, feminism, and being a part of the FLF.

Deadline to apply is Friday, March 28th, 2014.

Please note: This is open to any students at Robson Hall and we encourage you to apply!

Happy studying,

FLF

Hello Everyone,

Thanks to everyone who came out and bought some pancakes on Tuesday! I have heard that we made $115 (not 100% sure that’s the final number though).

Also, thank you to everyone who donated clothes! We are going to set up a box in the general office in case anyone didn’t get a chance to donate clothes today! The box will be set up there until Friday.

Thanks Everyone!

Pancake

In honour of International Women’s Day (which just happens to be today, Saturday, March 8th) the FLF is doing a Pancake Lunch on Tuesday, March 11th, in the main hallway at noon (feel free to checkout the lovely picture for the event I have attached to this email). The proceeds of the lunch will be going to the Elizabeth Fry Society.

On Tuesday, March 11th, at lunch we will also be collecting clothes for the Elizabeth Fry Society, as they have a wonderful set-up which aids women recently released from prison. These women often need nicer clothing to attend court dates and job interviews and the Elizabeth Fry Society tries to provide them with this type of clothing. If you cannot drop clothes off on Tuesday let us know and we will try to make other arrangements for you.

If you want more info about the Elizabeth Fry clothing program go to this link: http://www.efsmanitoba.org/Services-Programs.page

Also, if you have Facebook feel free to RSVP to our Event at the link below:

Where-Prostitution

Finally, just a reminder that on this coming Monday (March 10th) at 2:30pm, in room 206, Professor Busby is hosting a panel discussion entitled “Where Next For Prostitution Laws?” The recent SCC Bedford decision has struck down some of Canada’s Prostitution Laws and the panel will discuss what should happen next.

To read the Bedford decision click the link below (you don’t have to read the decision to attend the talk, I just thought some might be interested — if you haven’t been required to read it for class already)

Just wanted to send out a reminder that our roundtable with Professor Busby is on Thursday, January 23rd, at 12:00 and will be held in room 205.

The roundtable is titled “What Should Happen Next in the Lori Douglas Inquiry?”

In September 2012 the FLF co-hosted an event on the Douglas Inquiry with the Centre for Human Rights Research. Anyone who wants to read the write-up about that event can do so here: https://feministlegalforum.wordpress.com/2012/09/14/douglas-inquiry-discussion-at-robson-hall/

It should be an interesting topic! Please come out and join us for the first roundtable of 2014!

Second, we have another roundtable planned for Thursday, February 13th, at 12:00 (no room yet). The tentative title for this event is “Judy Wasylycia-Leis talks power politics and feminism”

The speaker for this event will be Judy Wasylycia-Leis, a former MLA, MP and 2010 Mayoral Candidate.

The topic for this roundtable is still being worked out, but women in politics/positions of power has been discussed as a possible topic, as well as possibly Ms. Wasylycia-Leis’ experiences training women in Pakistan. So once we have more solid details on this event we will let you all know.

So, for now mark your calendars!

As always everyone is welcome to bring their lunches to the roundtables. There may also be some tasty treats provided. We hope to see a big turnout for both events!

Update on the Shoe Box Project Fundraiser:
The Shoe Box project was started by the wife of the Dean of Sciences. This year her goal was to have a box for every woman in the three women’s shelters in the city. This would require about 60 boxes. With the help of the FLF donations the project has received enough goodies to make up 900 boxes. These boxes will be shipped all across the province to various women’s shelters and transition homes. Some of the Shoe Boxes are even headed to Thompson!
Big thanks to FLF members and the Robson Hall Community for your kind donations.
